Gas formation in babies is a feeling of discomfort which is accompanied by pain in the abdomen when any kind of gas formed is trying to ooze out of the body through the digestive system. There is nothing to be worried about. Let us see few signs and symptoms in babies which indicate that they have become gassy and what remedies will help your little sweetheart get easy and fast relief.
Before that let us understand why does gas formation take place in babies?
Well, if a baby is suffering from gas, it means that its stomach has been inflated with air which has taken place either due to digestion process or due to ingestion of some unwanted air while feeding since babies swallow or gulp down their food. Gas formation in babies is characterised by bloating, pain and cramps in the abdomen. Here are some reasons why gas formation takes place:
Drinking rapidly: If the feeding bottle’s nipple has a fast flow of milk or any other liquid, the baby tends to gulp down a comparatively large quantity of milk at one go. Also, if the mother has a more than active supply of milk from her breasts, the same thing can happen. This gulping of milk causes gas to occur.
Drinking slowly: Just as drinking fast can be a contributory reason for gas formation, drinking too slowly can also result in the same. If the nipple of the mother’s breast or the feeding bottles gives a slow flow of milk, the baby ends up taking in more and more air leading to gas formation.
Feeding formula feed: If formula feed in powdered form is mixed with water and given to the infant or baby, then it should be allowed to settle for a few minutes before feeding because on stirring and mixing, more and more air bubbles are formed in the feed which if immediately fed makes a baby gassy.
Crying for a longer period: If the baby keeps on crying for a longer time, then it can swallow a lot of air from the atmosphere and in turn make your baby become gassy. So first try to calm your crying baby.
Consumption of gas-forming foods: Babies do not have a digestive system which is well-developed as that of adults. So they cannot tolerate complex foods. They should be given foods in an easily-digestible form. Complex foods can lead to bloating due to gas formation. Also, if the baby has some kind of food intolerance, then consumption of intolerable foods can lead to the formation of gas as well.
